What makes a good doctor?
I have been in practice for 22 years and have learned a few things along the way. Recently, I have had a giant influx of new patients because the population of our valley is exploding. How do they find me? It’s interesting. Most people say they heard about me from a neighbor or hair dresser or friend….word of mouth. Some people say they found me on google. None the less, they decided to come in because it “seemed like we would be a good fit”. How is a doctor a good fit? This gets me back to my original question of what makes a doctor a good one.
LISTEN—I am a very fucking impatient person generally….but I can listen to people’s stories for ever. Best part of my job.
Be fucking real—I am a human who wipes their butt too. I paid a lot of money for my education and that’s what makes us different…you are paying for my brains/thoughts.
Care—develop relationships with your patients…get to know them…care about them.
Time management—your time is as valuable as mine. Be on time!!! Don’t waste others time.
Expertise—22 years of on the job training makes me a good damn physician.
Do the work—do what you say you will do. Help people…if you don’t know, tell them that. Find someone who does…or figure it out.
Offer sound, realistic advice—don’t have an all or nothing rule. I meet my patients in the middle, compromise and a good plan make for a compliant patient.
Don’t overcharge—my biggest pet peeve with medicine. The prices are ridiculous and the time is usually too short.
Be a good human—
I think that about sums it up. I PRACTICE all of the above. I may swear and telling fishing stories, but I do genuinely care and I’m fucking good at me job. Don’t settle for mediocre.
